TEACHING

THOMAS WAS THRILLING,
POWERFUL

VOCALLY AND WITHOUT EXCESS.

- LOS ANGELES TIMES

American tenor Russell Thomas brings the same authority, artistry, and technical mastery to his teaching that he brings to the world’s leading opera stages. As a Professor of Practice in Voice at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, he works closely with emerging professionals, guiding singers toward healthy, expressive, and sustainable vocalism at every stage of their development.

Thomas’s approach is grounded in decades of experience performing the most demanding repertoire in both the Italian lyric and German dramatic traditions.

Serious singers seek out his studio for its rigor, clarity, and real-world results: his students have been invited to many of the country’s top young artist and training programs, including Santa Fe Opera, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, Palm Beach Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program, and Houston Grand Opera’s YAVA. His students have also excelled in major competitions, including receiving recognition and regional finalist honors in the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

Equally respected as a mentor and adjudicator, Thomas serves on judging panels for prominent national competitions such as Schmidt Vocal Arts, the George Shirley Vocal Competition, and the Metropolitan Opera’s Laffont Competition. His insight, high artistic standards, and firsthand knowledge of the profession make him a valued evaluator of the next generation of classical vocal talent.

In addition to his university work, Thomas is widely sought after for masterclasses and residencies. He has taught at Northwestern University, La Sierra University, the University of Maryland, the George Shirley Foundation, and has been a guest teacher for young artist programs at Washington National Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, and the Canadian Opera Company.

With a career shaped by excellence onstage and in the studio, Russell Thomas offers singers world-class guidance rooted in experience, artistry, and an unwavering commitment to their success.

STUNNING

SPINE-TINGLING
high notes.

What a joy it was to hear the stunning tenor voice of Russell Thomas as Manrico. He sang consistently with ardent expression and spine-tingling high notes. His pairing with Barton was believable and magnetic.”
